Refried Beans

This recipe for refried beans is almost as easy as opening a can! Not only that, it's healthier since it leaves out the lard, and so cheap to make.

Serves 6

1 1/2 cups dried pinto beans
5 cups water
1 onion
2-3 cloves garlic, chopped
3 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper
1 tsp cumin

Cut the onion in half and place half in your crock pot. Wrap up the other half for another use. Combine the rest of the ingredients in the crock pot and cook on high for 6-8 hours.

Remove the onion and discard. Drain beans and put into a blender, but reserve the 'juice'. (I use a slotted spoon to get the beans into the blender. Fewer dishes.) Blend until smooth, adding 'juice' as needed to get the texture you like.

Voila! So easy a child can do it.

  1. I had to laugh at this post. My sister in law came over awhile back and saw me put our beans in the blender. She is from a hispanic family and apparently they never do that. She thought I was a bit crazy. Glad to see someone else does it this way!
